Promession - Ecological burial
Promession is an inspiring new alternative to traditional means of burial. The Promessa Foundation, based in Sweden, created the process out of recognition of a need for a more eco-conscious method than what has previously been available.
Promession is an ecologically sound method of processing bodies that is founded on the understanding that Life begets Life. The process removes all moisture from the body through a freeze-drying method, then breaks it down into a dried powder that can be put into a container made from a biodegradable starch and buried at the base of a tree (or even a shrub or bed of flowers). In 6-12 months time this method allows the body to become compost, which is consumed by the tree. The tree then stands as a symbol, a living and growing memoriam, of that person.
It is our intention to offer this service to other local and regional funeral homes as well as act as a hub for franchising the process to the United States. For more information on the Promession process please visit

As an alternative for those who choose not to use Promession, Phoenix Mortuary will also offer the slightly more traditional method of cremation with a selection of urns to choose from, as well as custom engraving options.
- - - Family Tree
Living Family Tree
Online, at Emmortality.com you have the ability to create an electronic Family Tree; in the Summerland Gardens you can create a living physical representation of that Tree. You can choose from any existing tree in the garden, or have a new sapling planted, and have your remains interred at its base. Over time the course of Nature will allow your Tree to be enriched and nourished by you in the most physical sense. Family members and friends can visit the garden and sit by your Tree and know that it is part of you. Family members that pass after you can be buried at the same tree and begin creating a true "Family Tree".
Optional services will include:
- A marker bearing the Family name and/or crest
- Leaves from the tree mailed to family and friends annually
- Wine made of the fruit harvested from your tree sent to family and friends (this, of course, is only an option if a fruit tree is chosen)
We found this poem on the
PromessaFoundation website and felt that it
encapsulated the romance of our efforts.
Transformations
Portion of this yew
Is a man my grandsire knew,
Bosomed here at its foot:
This branch may be his wife,
A ruddy human life
Now turned to a green shoot.
These grasses must be made
Of her who often prayed,
Last century, for repose;
And the fair girl long ago
Whom I often tried to know
May be entering this rose.
So, they are not underground,
But as nerves and veins abound
In the growths of upper air,
And they feel the sun and rain,
And the energy again
That made them what they were!
